Swan: Year
round resident on the reserve with 1 pair breeding for the first time in many
years fledging 3 young, with a maximum count of upto 14 seen on
any one date.
Whooper
Swan: In
January 1 seen on 1st,2nd,3rd,6th,12th,1th,17th,20th,21st
with 2 on 24th. In October 2 adults + 1 juv
on 22nd, 2 adults + 4 juvs on 24th
with 3 adults
on 30th.
In N ovember 1 on 3rd and 4th
with 2 on 23rd to 30th. In December 2 on 9th, 12,
6 adults and 6 juveniles present on 12th, 6 on 24th with 1
on 25th
being the last sighting of the year.
Pink-Footed
Goose: In
January 32 on 5th, 75 on 22nd, 100 on 29th,
500 on 30th and 65 on 31st all flying North. In February
2 with Greylag flock on 17th, 19th,
22ndand
26th. In March 2 with Greylag all month
with 3 on 10th and 150 flew north on 18th. In April 2
again all month with a Greylag
flock.which
stayed until May 23rd. In October 57 flew west on 8th,
160 flew south on 22nd, 80 flew east on 23rd. In
November 28 flew west
on 5th
and 150 flew south on 19th.
Greylag Goose: A year round resident on the reserve with
6+ pairs breeding successfully, with a peak count for the year of 700+ on 15th
September.
Canada
Goose: Present
in all month’s of the year with 1 pair breeding successfully raising 4 young, a
maximum count of 44 was made on several dates
throughout the year.
Shelduck: In January 80 on 26th was the
highest count, down to c20 in February, single figure counts made in March,
April and May, A pair bred hatching 7
young in June which fell to
2 young in July and August., 1 juvenile seen on and off in September, numbers
built up again in December with 40 by
31st.
Wigeon: In January 5 on 2nd, 2 on 19th,
4 on 21st, 7 on 25th, in February 1 on 3rd, 3
on 25th, present throughout March with a peak of 9 on 5th,
small flock
throughout April, in May male
on 10th and wing-tagged female on 27th, in June 2 males
inc 1 wing-tagged bird on 8th, in July 2 on 15th and 1 on
29th, a
wing-tagged female present from
10th August onwards with numbers rising to 8 by 17th
September, 16 on 21st October and 2nd November.
Wing-tagged
male again present from 2nd
December with upto 6 present by end of year.
Gadwall:
A year round
resident with WeBS counts of 50 in January, 38 in
February, 14 in March, 48 in October, 52 in November, 47 in December. At least
4
pairs bred successfully.
Teal:
Now a year
round resident on the reserve but no sign of breeding having taken place, WeBS count of 249 in January, 253 in February, 158 in
March, 75 in
October, 275 in November and 240 in
December.
Mallard:
A year round
resident with WeBS counts of 335 in January, 28 in
February, 29 in March, 186 in October, 262 in November, 241 in December. Also at
least 10 pairs bred raising
many young.
Pintail:
In January 2 on
11th, 14th, 16th, 3 on 18th, 2 on
19th, 22nd, 5 on 29th, 6 on 30th
and 3 on 31st. In February 6 on 1st, 3 on 2nd,
4 on 4th, 2 on 5th, 3 on 8th, 1 on
9th, 17th,
23rd, 24th and 25th. In March 2 on 1st
and 2nd, 1 on 14th, with 3 on 15th to 21st.
In October 1 on 16th and 17th. 1 on 4th Novenber. Male on
22nd.
Garganey: In May male on 16th,
2 males on 18th, male on 21st and male on 31st.
Female on 10th June and female
on 6th September
Shoveler: Present in every month of the year with WeBS counts of 6 in January, 12 in February, 10 in March, 7
in October, 13 in November and 14 in December.
25 seen on a few occasions
with 1 pair breeding successfully raising 5 young.
Pochard: A year round resident on the reserve with WeBS counts of 13 in January, 12 in February, 16 in March,
32 in October, 23 in November and 39 in
December.
Tufted
Duck: A year
round resident with several pairs breeding with WeBS
counts of 75 in January, 44 in February,
31 in March, 82 in October, 26 in
November, 69 in
December.
Scaup: An adult male seen on 6th to 8th
February was a new species for the reserve.
Eider: Female present for only 40 minutes before
flying off high east on 27th December was a first record for the
reserve.
Common Scoter: 2 drakes on 14th March was the
only record of the year.
Goldeneye: In January female on 9th and 12th,
male on 13th, 18th and 21st, female on 30th
and 31st, in February female seen on 4th, 8th,
9th, 15th, 17th, 20th and 24th,
female on 1st
March. In August female on 6th
and 14th, female on 12th October, in December pair on 10th,
8 on 17th, 1 on 23rd,
pair on 26th, female on
30th.
Smew: Red-head present briefly on 29th
January.
Goosander:
In January
female on 4th to 6th with 4 on 7th, 9th,
11th and 28th. Seen on and off throughout February with a
maximum of 6 seen on any one date, in
March the maximum count
was 7 on 6th, female on 1st April and 28th May.
1 on 2nd September, female on 20th October. In November
pair on 10th,
female on 18th,
21st and 27th with 2 females on 28th. In
December female on 1st, 9th, male on 22nd and 28th.
Ruddy Duck: First of the year was a female on 10th
March with 4 on 22nd and 2 on 29th, then seen on and off in every month for
the rest of the year
in small numbers.
Red-legged
Partridge: Resident
in varying numbers around the reserve with a peak count of 41 in January. With several young seen
during the Summer
months.
Grey
Partridge: Afew pairs resident in fields around the reserve all year with a group
of 5 young seen in mid August. In December a group of 13 seen on 2nd, 7
on 6th
and 5 on 12th.
Pheasant: A year round resident in small numbers with
a few pairs breeding around the reserve.
Little Grebe: A year round resident on the reserve with WeBS counts of 15 in January, 20 in February, 10 in March,
31 in October, 22 in November and 11 in
December. At least 5
pairs bred successfully.
Great Crested Grebe: Present in every month of the
year with 3 pairs attempting to nest of which only 1 pair was successful
raising 4 young.
Black-Necked
Grebe: 2 summer
plumaged birds on June 14th with 1 winter plumaged bird on 29th
August.
Cormorant: Seen in every month of the year with a
maximum count of 7 seen on 21st
October.
Bittern: 1 on 2nd May was a first record for
the reserve.
Little
Egret: 1 on 13th
June was first of the year, 1 on 6th August, in September 1 on 10th
with 2 on 20th and 23rd, 1 on 25th to 27th
and 30th, in October 1 on 1st,
2nd and 6th.
Grey Heron: 1 on 15th April was first of the
year, in May 1 on 10th, 20th and 23rd, seen on
and off throughout June with a high of 3
on 6th, 1 on 22nd July, in
August 1 on 4th
and 14th and 3 on 16th. Single seen on and off in
November and December.
White
Stork: On 4th May 1 flew in from
North-West at 11:55am then drifted over reserve before circling over North Cave
village for c10 minutes after
which the
bird appeared to drift
off in a South-Easterly direction.
Red
Kite: 1 or 2 birds
from nearby breeding site seen in every month of the year usually over edge of wolds to the east of the reserve but occasionally flying
over
the reserve. A juvenile from
nearby breeding pair a green wing-tagged bird was seen over the reserve on 5th
August.
Marsh
Harrier: Female
seen 4th, 6th, 9th, 11th, 12th
and 21st January, in May
female on 23rd and male on 31st, in June male seen on 1st,
5th, 8th and 24th. In July
male + female seen
on 1st, male on 8th, female on 18th and 29th.
In August juvenile seen on 6th, 13th and 15th.
In September juvenile seen on 1st,
male on 16th,
juvenile on 18th and 20th, 1 on 27th. In
November female on 7th and 11th with male on 28th.
A Female on 2nd December was last
sighting of the
year.
Hen Harrier: Adult female flew west on 3rd
February, 1 flew through reserve on 19th March and 1 on 11th
September.
Goshawk: Pair
seen displaying distantly to north on 26th January by an experienced
birder familiar with the species.
Sparrowhawk: Seen regularly throughout every month of
the year on and around the reserve.
Buzzard:
Several birds
now resident in woodland along ridge to east of reserve with birds seen regularly
from the reserve and occasionally
overflying the
reserve, with upto a dozen birds seen in the air together during fine
autumn days.
Osprey: 1 seen twice on
9th April and 1 on May 31st,
in July 1 on 1st and 9th.
Merlin: 1 on 9th January, in February
male on 7th, 1 on 14th and 18th. 1 on 28th
October.
Hobby:
1 on 13th
May was first of the year, in June singles seen on 1st, 5th,
17th, 23rd, 24th and 26th, 1 on 2nd
July, 1 on 28th August with the last sighting of the
year being a late bird on October
12th.
Peregrine: In February 1 on 8th,
9th and 26th, in March 1 on 4th and 20th,
1 on April 22nd, juvenile flew south over reserve on 20th
June, in July 1 on 7th and 31st, 1
on 14th October.
Water Rail: 1 on 4th of January and 1 on 5th
March.
Moorhen: A year round resident with several pairs
breeding and a maximum WeBS count of 44 on 12th March.
Coot: A year round resident with several pairs
breeding with WeBS counts of 220 in January, 205 in February, 198 in
March, 239 in October, 149 in November
and 202 in December.
Oystercatcher: 1 on 3rd February was first of
the year with 15 by 24th, in March 40 on 17th. By June 2
pairs were nesting 1 of which failed but the other pair
successfully raised 2
young. High count in August was 7 on 5th. 1 on 1st
September, a late bird seen on 10th December.
Avocet:
1 on March 10th
was first of the year with 13 present by end of month, a total of 7 pairs attempted
to bred this year with the first young seen on 21st May
although only 2 young were
successfully fledged this year with several chicks being predated by a Kestrel
and others probable being lost during poor
weather. 1 on 8th September was
last report of the year.
Little
Ringed Plover: 3
on March 25th were the first of the year with at least 2 pairs
breeding with the first young seen on 8th July with the last
sighting being 2
juveniles til 6th September.
Ringed
Plover: 1 on 8th
February was first of the year with 9 by 22nd, 8 throughout March,
April, last sighting 1 in September.
Golden Plover: In January maximum count was 55 on 25th,
in February 300+ on 24th, in March 200+ on and off. In Autumn began
to be seen again from
September with 50+
seen on 23rd, flocks of upto 60 seen on
and off in October.300+ on 3rd to 5th November and 200+
on 31st December.
Grey
Plover: 1 on 13th
October was a rare reserve record.
Lapwing:
Seen on and
around the reserve all year round with flocks of several hundred birds seen after
the breeding season and during the winter months, at least
40 pairs bred on the reserve raising
many young between them, with the first young seen on 24th April.
Knot: 1 on 17th March, 1 on 22nd
April, in August 1 on 3rd, 1 on 6th, 1 on 18th,
1 on 26th and 27th September. 1 on 24th and 27th
December.
Sanderling: 1 on 1st and 2nd May,
with 1 on 7th July.
Little Stint: 1 on 22nd
May, 2 on 5th to 7th September with 1 from 13th
to 18th September.
Temminck’s Stint: 1 juvenile seen on 20th
to 25th August was first juvenile and autumn record for the site.
Curlew Sandpiper: 1 on 15th August was
only report of the year.
Dunlin: Seen in every month of the year
except December with high counts of 9 on
24th January,7 on 9th February, 15 on 15th
March, 14 on 24th April, 6 in May,
singles in June, July, August, 2
on 17th September , 5 on 29th October, 1 on 25th
to 28th November.
Ruff: 1 on 2nd January, in
March 2 on 28th, 1 on 31st, 1 or 2 seen on and off
throughout April and May, 1 on 15th June, 9 on 18th
August, in September a small
flock of between 4 and 11 seen from 17th
until 2nd October decreasing down to 3 on 28th.
Jack
Snipe: In
February 1 on 4th and 1 on 19th. In March 2 on 22nd
and finally 1 on 6th November.
Snipe:
Seen in every
month of the year except June with a peak of c75 in late October.
Woodcock:
1 on 1st
January, 1 on 3rd February and 1 on 2nd November.
Bar-tailed
Godwit: 1 on 28th
March was a rare reserve record.
Curlew:
5 on 13th
January was highest count of the month, 1 on 4th and 14th
February, then seen on off throughout rest of the year in small numbers, 6 on
24th
September. Seen on and off in October with
28 on 14th and 17th being the highest count. Seen on and
off throughout November and December in small
numbers.
Spotted
Redshank: Summer
plumaged bird on 15th July was first of the year, juvenile then
present from 21st August to 1st September, 2 juveniles on
10th
September,
finally 1 on 14th November.
Redshank: Highest counts made during the
year were 47 on January 15th and 51 on 31st December. 2
pairs bred this year each raising 2 young.
Greenshank: 1 on 5th May was
first of the year with singles on 9th, 13th and 21st,
in July 1 on 2nd and 7th,
2 on 16th and 1 on 25th, seen regularly throughout
August with high counts
of 4 on 3rd and 5 on 25th, 4 on 22nd September, with 2 on 4th
October being the last sightings of the year.
Green Sandpiper:
1 from 3rd to 5th
March was first of the year, in April 1 on 6th, 9th, 12th
and 24th, in May 1 on 2nd and 2 on 6th, in
June 1 on 12th, and 2 on 26th,
seen
daily in July and August with upto 4 on some days, in
September 1 on 5th, 8th and 24th, in October 1
on 1st and 4th. In December 1 on 25th
and 27th.
Wood Sandpiper: In May 2 on 12th to
16th with 1 til 17th with 1 on
21st August.
Common
Sandpiper: 1 on 20th
April was first of the year with 2 on 23rd, 1 or 2 seen on and off
throughout May, seen daily in July and August with 6+ present
on 23rd
July and 5 on 18th August , singles seen on and off in September
with 2 on some days. In October 1 on 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th.

Turnstone:
1 on 18th
April was first of the year with 1 also on
25th, 2 on 13th May with 1 on 28th and 29th,
a flock of 10 briefly on 15th August, 2 on 3rd
September being the last
of the year.
Arctic
Skua: An adult dark-phase bird flew North-East over the reserve on 13th
August and was a new species for the reserve.
Mediterranean
Gull: 1 on 31st
January, a 1st summer on 29th May and 1 on 6th
December were only reports of the year
Yellow-Legged
Gull: Adult
seen on 16th July with 1 on 18th and 31st
October were only reports of the year.
Little
Gull: 2 a 1st
summer and a 2nd summer on 22nd April were the first of
the year, in May 1 on 15th to 17th, 8 on 18th,
3 on 19th, 1 on 20th, 3 on 21st, 1 on 22nd,

on 23rd and 24th,
3 on 26th, 1 on 27th and 28th, all being 1st
summer birds. 1 on 9th June, 1 on 31st August,
Black-headed
Gull: Seen all
year round on the reserve with a colony of c120 pairs breeding raising many
young.
Common
Gull: Seen on
and off in every month of the year in small numbers.
Herring
Gull: Seen on
and off in small numbers in every month of the year except June, July and
December.
Lesser
Black-backed Gull: 1 on 10th March was first of the year then seen on and
off for rest of year in small numbers with upto 20
seen at times.
Greater
Black-backed Gull: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers with upto 50 birds present on occasions.
Common
Tern: 2 on 22nd
April were the first of the year, a maximum of 8 seen in May with 3 pairs
nesting by end of the month. A total of 6 nesting pairs this
year with the first
pair hatching 2 young on 24th June with 10 juveniles seen by 17th
August after which numbers began to drop
off with the last
birds seen for the
year being 2 juveniles on 3rd September.
Arctic
Tern: 2 adults
on 1st August were the first and only confirmed records for the year
Little
Tern: 2 flew south through reserve on
21st May and was a new species for the reserve.
Black
Tern: Single
summer plumaged birds seen on 2nd and 8th May.
Stock
Dove: Seen in
all months of the year in small numbers around the reserve.
Woodpigeon:
Present around
the reserve all year in varying numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding.on
the reserve.
Turtle
Dove: 1 flying
north on 29th of April was first of the year, in May 1 on 14th,
2 on 27th and 1 on 30th, in June 1 on 14th, 2
on 27th, 1 on 30th, in July a pair
seen on 2nd,
7th, 8th and 27th. 1 on 12th August
and 1 on 19th being the last report of the year.
Cuckoo:
1 heard on 24th
April was first of the year with 1 also on 30th, in May singles on 5th,
7th, 12th, 17th and 28th. In June 1
on 2nd and 3rd were the last reports
of the year.
Barn
Owl: The pair
resident around farm just to north of reserve could been seen regularly hunting
on and around the reserve mainly a single bird but 2 birds
seen together on occasions,
Little
Owl: The pair
resident just to west of reserve seen from 21st March then on and
off throughout the rest of the year until .
Swift:
First of year
was 1 on 25th April with the last being 1 on 5th
September.
Kingfisher: 1 on 12th and 14th
February then not again until 1 on 14th June then 1 or 2 seen on and
off until last seen in late November.
Green
Woodpecker: Present
throughout the year,mostly single bird sightings but
2 seen together on many dates.
Great
Spotted Woodpecker: Seen throughout the year mainly single birds but pair together on
occasions.
Skylark: Several pairs bred on the reserve this year
with counts of upto 20 during December in winter
stubble fields around the reserve.
Sand
Martin: First
of year was 1 on March 26th with 150+ by 31st, upto 6 pairs nesting in June but had deserted by mid July in
favour of a more suitable site
nearby, but fed in
large numbers over the reserve on occasions. Last sighting of the year was in
mid September.
Swallow: 1 on March 29th was
first of the year with 3 on 16th October being last of the year,
with an impressive 300+ birds moving south on 24th September.
House
Martin: 1 on 9th
April was first of the year with 3 on 20th September being the last
sightings of the year.
Tree Pipit: 1 on 19th May and seen again on
23rd, 25th and 28th. 1 again seen on 15th
June.
Meadow
Pipit: Present
all year round on or around the reserve in small numbers with 1 or 2 pairs
breeding on site.
Rock
Pipit: 1 on 4th
March, 1 on 1st April, 2 on 6th, 1 on 10th and
2 on 11th, in October 1 on 15th.
Water
Pipit: 2 seen
on 6th April with 1 til 9th.
Yellow
Wagtail: 1 on 8th
April was first of the year with 1 on 11th, 2 on 13th, 3
on 14th and 2 on 17th, in May 1 on 5th, 11th,
18th and 30th. 1 on 15th June, 1 on 22nd
July, in August 1
on 17th and 2 on 27th, in September 1 on 16th
and 24th were the last reports of the year.
Grey Wagtail: 1 on 13th September was
surprisingly the first of the year, in October 1 on 8th and 15th,
in November singles seen on 7th, 11th, 18th,
20th and 23rd,
the last of the year
was 1 on 20th December.
Pied Wagtail: Seen in every month of the year, in small
numbers in the early part of the year with numbers building up in autumn and winter
with 90+ seen in
mid December.
Wren:
Resident all
year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs probably breeding.
Dunnock: Resident all year round on the reserve in
small numbers with a few pairs breeding.
Robin:
Resident all
year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few birds breeding.
Whinchat:
In August 1 on
8th, 5 on 29th down to 2 by 3rd September with
1 on 15th.
Stonechat:
Pair present
from 1st January until 3rd February female then present
until 6th March. In October male on 23rd and female on 24th.
Wheatear:
First of the
year was 1 on 14th April with 3 on 16th and 22nd,
2 on 23rd, in May 2 on 1st, 1 on 5th, 1 on 15th,
in September 1 on 2nd, with the last reports
being in October with 1 on 2nd
and 13th.
Blackbird:
Resident
throughout the year with occasional small influxes of birds in the autumn with
a few pairs Breeding.
Fieldfare: 30+ seen on 1st April, 5o+ on 2nd
November were the only notable flocks seen.
Song
Thrush: Seen in
all months of the year in small numbers with probable the odd pair breeding.
Redwing: 44
on 14th October, 45 over on 1st November were the only
notable flocks seen.
Mistle Thrush: Seen on and off in all months of the year
in small numbers.
Grasshopper
Warbler: 1 heard ‘reeling’ but not seen
on May 3rd was a new species for the reserve.
Sedge
Warbler:.1 on
24th April was first of the year, upto 5
males singing by end of May and throughout June, 4 pairs breeding in July, 1 on
5th August, 1 on 13th
September and 2 on
15th were the last sightings of the year.
Reed Warbler: 1 on 6th May was first of the
year with 1 on 14th, 2 on 17th, 1 on 25th and
26th, 2 males singing on and off throughout June, heard singing
occasionally throughout
July but no evidence of breeding having taken place. 1 bird seen on and off
throughout August with 2 on 29th,
in
September 2 on 2nd, 1 on
12th and 2 on 13th were the last sightings of the year.
Lesser
Whitethroat:.1 on 25th
April was first of the year with 2 on 30th, 2 singing on and
off throughout May, June unti 21st July. Seen occasionally in August.
No proof of
breeding seen this year.
Whitethroat: 1 on 18th April was first of the
year with many birds present by end of the month, several pairs bred in the
hedgerows surrounding the reserve..The
last sightings of the
year were in September.
Garden Warbler:.1 on 1st of July was first of
the year with 2 on 5th and 1 on 21st. 1 on 5th
and 16th August. In what was a poor year for sightings of this
species.
Blackcap: 1 on 20th April was first of the
year, with 1 on 9th and 21st July. 1 on 18th
August., 1 on 17th September in a poor year for sightings.
Chiffchaff: 1 on 8th April was first of the
year, 1 on 30th September was the last.
Goldcrest: A scarce reserve visitor with 1 on 6th
and 4 on 8th January, 1 on 3rd February, 1 on 12th
March, 1 on 16th September, In
November 2 on 4th with then
upto
10 seen on 5th. In December 1 on 6th, 18th and
20th.
Long-tailed
Tit: Seen on
and off throughout the year in every month except April with flocks of 20+ seen
at times.
Coal
Tit: 1 on 12th
February and 1 on 17th December were only reports of the year of
this scarce reserve visitor.
Blue
Tit: Resident
all year with at least 5 pairs breeding in the nest boxes on the reserve.
Great
Tit: Resident
all year with at least 4 pairs breeding in the nest boxes on the reserve.
Magpie:
Resident on and
around the reserve all year round with flocks of upto
7 seen at times, with at least 1 pair breeding.
Jackdaw: Resident on and around the
reserve all year round with 1 ‘eastern race type’ bird seen on 21st
February within a flock of c75 birds.
Rook:
Resident on and
around the reserve all year round, often large numbers seen at roost times.
Carrion
Crow: Resident
on and around the reserve all year round.
Starling: Resident on and around the
reserve all year round, with flocks of upto 4000 seen
at times.
House
Sparrow:,Seen in most months of the year in
small numbers but still an uncommon visitor to the reserve from nearby village.
Tree
Sparrow: Resident
in varying numbers throughout the year upto a maximum
flock of 40 seen, at least 2 pairs bred
this year on the reserve each raising 2
broods.
Chaffinch:
Year round
resident of the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.
Brambling:
Female on 22nd
January was only report of the year.
Greenfinch:
Resident on the
reserve all year round in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.
Goldfinch:
Resident on the
reserve all year round in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.
Siskin: In January 30+ present from 3rd
with 50+ on 12th February, 5 left by end of March, 1 on 22nd
October. 1 on 9th, 2 on 12th and 1 on 24th
December.
Linnet: Present on and off all year
with a maximum of 50 seen at any one time.
Lesser
Redpoll: In
January 1 on 1st, 14th, 3 on 22nd, 2 on 24th,
2 on 30th, in February 1 on 4th and 6th, 2 on
9th, 12 on 16th, 28 on 18th inc 4 ‘pale’
birds. In March
c40 on 4th,
12 on 5th, 2 on 11th and 14th, 4 on 18th.
5 on 5th April. In November 3 on 5th and 1 on 27th.
In December 3 on 8th were the last of the

Bunting: 1 on 16th to 24th February with a second bird also present briefly
on 19th were the first records for the reserve.

Seen in every
month of the year in small numbers.
Reed
Bunting: Resident
on the reserve all year round in small numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding.
Corn
Bunting: 2 on
18th January, 1 on 4th
February, 1 on 4th March, 2 singing birds holding territory on 22nd
April, and throughout May and June but no proof of
breeding having taken
place. 1 on 14th September was last reported sighting of the year.
Summary:
In total 156 species of bird were recorded
on or from the reserve in 2005 with 9 new species for the reserve (shown in Red)
