Bird Records 2008 For North Cave Wetlands.

Mute Swan: Year round resident on the reserve with 1 pair attempting to breed but failed, a peak count of 17 seen in January.

Whooper Swan: In March 19 on 28^th (17 adults and 2 juveniles). 1 adult on 11^th April. In October 7 on 17^th, 5 on 18^th, 7 flew South on 19^th, 2 on 22^nd and 23^rd,

with 8 also flying South on 22^nd. In November 1 on 1^st, 3 on 5^th and 6^th, 13 flew North on 7^th, 5 inc 3 juveniles on 11^th, 1 flew South on 13^th and

14^th, 3 on 19^th and 26^th, 4 from 27^th to 1^st December with 2 remaining to 7^th December. 5 flew East on 28^th December.

Pink-Footed Goose: 2 with Greylag flock on 13^th, 14^th, 16^th, 19^th, 3 on 24^th, 1 on 25^th, 8 on 26^th, 150+ flew North-West on 28^th. In February 4 on 12^th, 19^th and

20^th, 13 on 27^th and 70+ flew North on 28^th. In April 3 on 6^th, and 2 on 7^th till end of month. In August 1 on 5^th to 8^th. In September 8 with

Greylag flock on 28^th with another 45 flying East over reserve, 16 with Greylag flock on 29^th and 21 on 30^th. In October 30 South on 5^th,

150 South on 12^th, 20 on 16^th, 32 South and 600+ North on 18^th, 100 South on 25^th, 60 South on 27^th, 13 on 29^th, 6 on 30^th and 8 on 31^st. In

November 20 on 2^nd and 3^rd, 12 on 4^th, 30 on 11^th, c400 in stubble just North of reserve on 13^th to 16^th, c1000 flew South on 19^th, c2000 flew

North on 21^st, c1000 flew South on 22^nd, 5 on 28^th and 1 on 30^th. In December 4 on 9^th, 45 flying South on 11^th, 7 on 13^th, 6 on 17^th, 10 on

19^th, 8 on 24^th.

White-fronted Goose: 3 birds present for 15mins on 2^nd January then flew off North.

Greylag Goose: A year round resident on the reserve with 6+ pairs breeding successfully, WeBS counts of 122 in January, 1 in February, 10 in March, 627 in

October with a peak count for the year of 700+ seen throughout November and 150 in December.

Canada Goose: 221 on 25^th October was a new site record count. 70 on 16^th November.

Barnacle Goose: 1 of ‘unknown origin’ during September. 2 birds of ‘unknown origin’ in October. Up to 8 birds of ‘unknown origin’ seen on and off during

November.

Egyptian Goose: 1 present on and off from 25^th October to 29^th November.

Brent Goose: Adult ‘Dark-bellied’ birds present on 23^rd April and 9^th November.

Ross’s Goose: An escaped bird flew South with Greylag’s on 6^th September and was present on reserve for about an hour on 9^th.

Shelduck: 43 present by end of February. 2 pairs bred with broods of 8 and 13 but only 1 or 2 young surviving to fledge. 3 on 28^th November were the first

returning birds after their annual moult. Seen on and off in December with 8 on 1^st and 14 on 14^th.

Wigeon: 4 on 12^th February. In March female on 3^rd, pair on 14^th, 2 males and a female on 16^th. 1 male seen on and off from 3^rd May to end of June. In August 1

was present from 17^th onwards. 6 on 4^th September. In October 2 on 4^th, 2 on 10^th, 1 on 11^th, 4 on 30^th and 8 on 31^st. Seen on and off in November with 6

on 1^st and 5^th being the highest count. In December pair on 4^th, 7^th, 26^th and 27^th.

Gadwall: A year round resident with upto 5 pairs breeding successfully raising many young. WeBS Counts produced 14 in January, 36 in February, 17 in March,

34 in October, 27 in November and 12 in December.

Teal: Now a year round resident on the reserve but with no sign of breeding having taken place, WeBS counts of 221 in January, 118 in February, 36 in March,

then WeBS count of 198 in October, 227 in November and 184 in December.

Green-winged Teal: Drake moulting out of eclipse on 9^th November was a new species for the reserve.

Mallard: A year round resident with WeBS counts of 94 in January, 110 in February, 44 in March, 223 in October, 213 in November, 166 in December. Also

at least 10 pairs bred raising many young.

Pintail: Male on 14^th January, 2^nd and 16^th February, female present from 26^th September to 20^th October. In December 2 males on 9^th.

Garganey: Pair seen on the very early date of 26^th February. Drake on 30^th April. Juvenile present from 21^st August to 12^th September and 2 briefly on 25^th

September.

Shoveler: Present in every month of the year with WeBS counts of 25 in January, 21 in February, 21 in March, 27 in October, 15 in November and 4 in

December. At least 2 pair breeding successfully raising young.

Red-crested Pochard: 3 drakes, 2 in eclipse from 14^th to 19^th July.

Pochard: A year round resident on the reserve with WeBS counts of 21 in January, 13 in February, 14 in March, 11 in October, 28 in November and 3 in

December.

Tufted Duck: A year round resident with several pairs breeding with WeBS counts of 73 in January, 87 in February, 30 in March, in October, 59 in November, 8

in December.

Scaup: Female on 12^th January. Female on 24^th February, Female on 10^th April.

Common Scoter: Female on 26^th July and 31^st December were the only reports of the year.

Goldeneye: 3, 2 males and a female on 2^nd January with the female present on and off till end of March. Immature male on 27^th April. 1 or 2 birds seen on and

off from 1^st to 20^th November. In December 1 on 1^st, pair from 15^th to end of year.

Goosander: 2 or 3 birds present on and off throughout January with 5 on 25^th. Birds seen on and off throughout February with 6 on 27^th. Seen on and off in

March with 6 on 20^th being the highest count. In November 1 on 9^th, 15^th and 20^th. In December 1 on 4^th, 22^nd, 29^th with 3 on 30^th.

Ruddy Duck: Very few now being seen on reserve due to shooting policy with this species! With 2 on 17^th March. Pair on 18^th and 19^th April. And a few autumn

records of single birds.

Red-legged Partridge: Resident breeding species in varying numbers around the reserve with a peak count of up to 30 birds seen at times.

Grey Partridge: Very scarce this year with 3 on 24^th April. 1 on 30^th May and the odd autumn sighting.

Quail: Mail singing from wheat field just North of reserve early morning and late evening on 26^th July.

Pheasant: A year round resident in small numbers with a few pairs breeding around the reserve.

Little Grebe: A year round resident on the reserve with WeBS counts of 10 in January, 10 in February, 15 in March, 36 in October, 12 in November and 3 in

December. At least 5 pairs bred successfully.

Great Crested Grebe: Present in every month of the year with 5 pairs successfully breeding.

Black-necked Grebe: Pair in breeding plumage on 25^th April was the only sighting of the year.

Gannet: 2^nd year bird flew over reserve on 4^th October.

Cormorant: Seen in every month of the year with a maximum day count of 6 in December.

Little Egret: In July 3 on 13^th, 1 on 28^th, 29^th and 30^th. In August 1 on 1^st to 12^th and again on 16^th to 19^th. In October 1 on 28^th.

Grey Heron: Single birds seen on and off in every month of the year except February.

Red Kite: 1 or 2 birds seen along ridge to East of reserve in every month of the year. 3 birds together flew East over the reserve on 16^th March. 6 in the air

together on 10^th September was highest day count of the year.

Marsh Harrier: Female on 28^th February was first of the year. Female on 7^th March. Male on 6^th and 7^th April. 1 on 22^nd May. Male on 17^th June. 1 on 4^th and

16^th July. In August 1 on 3^rd, 9^th, 27^th and 29^th. In September 1 on 3^rd, 6^th, 11^th, 12^th and 30^th. In October 1 on 2^nd, 4^th and 12^th. In December 1 on

3^rd.

Goshawk: 1 seen just North of reserve on 9^th March.

Sparrowhawk: Seen regularly throughout and in every month of the year mostly just single birds but 2 together occasionally, hunting the autumn Starling roost.

Buzzard: Several birds now resident in woodland along ridge to east of reserve with birds seen regularly from the reserve and occasionally overflying the

reserve with up to a dozen birds seen in the air together in autumn.

Osprey: In September 1 on 13th, 2 on 14^th, and 1 on 18^th.

Merlin:. Female on 4^th February. 1 on 24^th March. Female on 12^th April. Female on 30^th August. Male on 7^th October.

Hobby: 2 on 28^th April were the first of the year. In May 1 on 9^th, 13^th and 18^th. In June 1 on 17^th, 20^th, 25^th, 27^th and 29^th. In July 1 on 7^th. In August 1 on 3^rd, 6^th,

7^th, 10^th, 27^th and 29^th. In September 1 on 4^th, 5^th and 6^th with 2 on 7^th. 1 on 5^th October was last of the year.

Peregrine: 2 together on 12^th January, 1 on 3^rd February. In March 1 on 9^th, 21^st, 24^th and 25^th. In April 1 on 4^th and 7^th. In June 1 on 1^st and 18^th. 1 on 31^st August.

In September 1 on 3^rd and 28^th. In October 1 on 11^th, 18^th, 19^th, 20^th, 21^st and 22^nd. In November 1 on 11^th, 13^th and 20^th. In December 1 on 26^th and

27^th.

Water Rail: 1 on 9^th and 24^th March. 1 on 20^th April. 1 on 26^th July. In August 1 seen on and off from 22nd to month’s end. In September 1 on 4^th. 1 on 23^rd

October. In December 1 on 12^th and 30^th.

Moorhen: A year round resident with several pairs breeding and maximum WeBS counts of 8 in January, 12 in February, 27 in March, 14 in October, 17 in

November and 10 in December.

Coot: A year round resident with several pairs breeding with WeBS counts of 139 in January, 131 in February, 139 in March, 102 in October, 102 in November

and 76 in December.

Common Crane: 3 birds circled just south of reserve for c20mins on 11^th May before flying off high North over the reserve. (4 Had flown over Blacktoft Sands

RSPB shortly beforehand).

Oystercatcher: 1 on 25^th January was first of the year. 36 by 28^th February. 40 on 6^th March. No evidence of breeding this year.

Avocet: 2 on 2^nd March were the first of the year with 10 by 21^st. Up to 39 birds seen during April with 6 pairs sitting by end of month. The first chicks were 4 on

24^th May. In June at least 11 pairs sitting plus 8 young seen on 4^th but only 1 young present on 9^th with the rest appearing to have been predated. Last

sighting of the year was 1 on 4^th July.

Little Ringed Plover: 2 on 31^st March were the first of the year. 1 or 2 seen on and off throughout April. 4 on 4^th May. In August up to 5 juveniles and 4 adults

were seen and were thought to have been breed on the new workings just south of the reserve. 1 juvenile still present till 11^th September

which was the last sighting of the year.

Ringed Plover: 1 on 8^th February was first of the year with 4 by end of month and throughout March, then seen on and off throughout the summer. 3 on 4^th

October were the last of the year. At least 2 pairs attempted to breed but appeared to have been unsuccessful.

Golden Plover: Seen in every month of the year except June with 60 on 13^th January. Numbers started to build up through August with 95+ on 30^th. Small

numbers seen on and off in September, October, November and December.

Grey Plover: 3 flew East on 17^th September with 1 on 12^th October and 1 on 3^rd December.

Lapwing: Year round resident with at least 40 pairs breeding on reserve raising many young. WeBS counts of 200 in January, 75 in February, 120 in March, 360

in October, 285 in November and 57 in December.

Sanderling: 2 briefly on 5^th August.

Little Stint: 1 on 26^th to 28^th July. 1 on 5^th August.

Dunlin: 1 on 8^th March was first of the year then seen on and off throughout March with a high count of 6 on 20^th. 2 at end of April. Up to 4 seen on and off

throughout May. In June 1 on 15^th. In July 1 on 1^st, 2 on 7^th, 17^th and 25^th and 1 on 27^th. In August 1 on 5^th, 2 on 26^th to 30^th. In September 2 on 4^th and

12^th, 1 on 14^th, 16^th and 27^th. In October 2 on 1^st and 7^th, 1 on 15^th and 26^th. In November 2 on 2^nd and 1 on 23^rd.

Ruff: Male on 26^th to 29^th April was first of the year. In May female seen on 13^th to 17^th. In July 3 on 1^st, 1 on 2^nd and 24^th. In August 1 on 14^th, 18^th and 24^th. 1

on 18^th September. 1 on 19^th October. In November 1 on 2^nd and 15^th.

Jack Snipe: In February 3 on 10^th, 15^th and 23^rd. Singles seen on 17^th and 24^th October, 21^st November, and 1 on 25^th December.

Snipe: 40+ on 18^th January. 24 in February. 3 in March. In July 10+ on 26^th. 20+ by end of August. 100+ by end of September and throughout October. In

November 30+ seen at times.

Woodcock: 1 on 2^nd January and 1 on 8^th November.

Black-Tailed Godwit: 3 on 28^th March were the first of the year. Singles seen on and off throughout April with 5 on 4^th. In July 1 on 17^th, 28^th and 29^th with 2 on

31^st. 1 on 11^th October.

Bar-tailed Godwit: 1 on 26^th April was only sighting of the year.

Whimbrel:. 1 on 19^th and 20^th April was first of the year with 2 on 21^st, 22^nd, 28^th and 29^th. In May 2 on 10^th, 1 on 16^th and 8 on 26^th. 1 on 24^th August. 1 on 24^th

September was last sighting of the year.

Curlew: 61 on 1^st January. 33 on 19^th February. Several flocks moving South over reserve in August with 81 on 6^th and 40+ on 12^th. Small numbers continued to

pass through reserve in September, October, November and December.

Spotted Redshank: Adult in summer plumage on 1^st May. Juvenile on 12^th September with another juvenile on 17^th to 19^th.1 on 16^th November.

Redshank: Wintering flock of 74 on 26^th January. 42 on 10^th February. 10 on 8^th March. 6 on 19^th August. 6 on 30^th October, 15 on 16^th November and 5 on 14^th

December. No sign of breeding this year.

Greenshank: 1 on 7^th May was first of the year with 3 on 13^th and 1 on 20^th. In June 1 on 30^th. In July 1 on 1^st and 2^nd, 19^th, 24^th and 27^th. In August 1 on 6^th and

9^th with 8 briefly on 18th, 1 on 29^th and 30^th. In September 1 on 2^nd and 4^th were the last of the year.

Green Sandpiper: 1 on 6^th May was first of the year. In June 1 on 25^th and 29^th. Seen on and off throughout July with 5 seen on 22^nd. Up to 4 birds seen on and

off in August. In September 2 on 12^th, 1 on 20^th with 4 on 22^nd and 25^th.

Wood Sandpiper: 1 on 6^th May, 1 on 10^th and 18^th July and 1 on 31^st August.

Common Sandpiper: 1 on 14^th April was first of the year with upto 3 seen on some days later in the month. 1 or 2 seen during May. In June 1 on 30^th. Seen daily

throughout July with at least 8 on 28^th. Seen throughout August in small numbers. In September single bird seen on and off all month. 1 on

1^st October was last report of the year.

Mediterranean Gull: An adult in near full summer plumage on 22^nd February. 1 on 26^th March and a 1^st summer bird on 17^th and 18^th April with a pair of 2^nd

summer birds present from 18^th April to 7^th May. An adult summer plumaged bird on 29^th and 30^th June and 1^st July. 1 on 23^rd December.

Little Gull: Immature on 23^rd April was first of the year with same or another on 28^th. 3, 1^st summer birds on 31^st May. 1^st summer birds seen in June were 1 on

1^st and 2^nd, 2 on 3^rd, 1 on 4^th,6^th and 7^th.1 on 11^th July.

Black-headed Gull: Seen all year round on the reserve with a colony of c120 pairs breeding, raising many young.

Common Gull: Seen on and off in every month of the year in small numbers.

Herring Gull: Seen on and off in small numbers in every month of the year.

Lesser Black-backed Gull: 1 on 6^th January was first of the year then seen on and off for rest of year in small numbers with up to 20 seen at times.

Greater Black-backed Gull: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers with up to 50 birds present on occasion

Common Tern:.1 on 16^th April was first of the year. Present throughout May with a maximum of 13 on 23^rd. By end of June 5 pairs nesting. In July only 1 pair

were successful raising 2 young all the other pairs failed due to rising water levels. The last sighting of the year was 1 on 1^st September.

Arctic Tern: In July 1 on 19^th and 21^st with 2 on 12^th August.

Black Tern: Adult summer plumaged bird seen on 9^th May was only report of the year.

Stock Dove: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers around the reserve.

Woodpigeon: Present around the reserve all year in varying numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding on the reserve.

Turtle Dove: 1 on 16^th May was first of the year with 2 on 30^th. In June 1 on 1^st and 2 on 6^th. 1 on 20^th July was last sighting of the year.

Cuckoo: 1 heard on 1^st May was the first of the year with 1 also seen on 17^th. In June 1 on 7^th and 14^th. In July a juvenile was seen on and off from 18^th to 27^th.

In August the juvenile was seen again on 2^nd and was the last sighting of the year.

Barn Owl: The pair resident around farm just to north of reserve could been seen regularly hunting on and around the reserve mainly a single bird but 2 birds

seen on a few occasions.

Little Owl: The pair resident just too west of reserve seen on and off all year. With a juvenile seen on the reserve on and off throughout June

Tawny Owl: 1 found roosting on 3rd December was a rare reserve sighting.

Short-eared Owl: 1 hunting over reserve on 27^th August.

Swift: First of year was 1 on 17^th April with 1 on 19^th September being the last of the year. A peak count of 400+ birds feeding over reserve on 21^st May.

Kingfisher: 1 on 17^th February was first of the year. In May 1 on 3^rd, 5^th, 6^th and 29^th. In June a pair with 3 young was seen from 23^rd into July. Up to 3 birds

seen on off throughout the rest of July, August, September and October. In November and December only seen occasionally.

Green Woodpecker: Present throughout the year, mostly single bird sightings but 2 seen together on many dates and 3 together on a few occasions. In July a

juvenile was seen on and off with 2 juveniles seen on 23^rd.

Great Spotted Woodpecker: Seen throughout the year mainly single birds but pair together on occasions.

Skylark: Several pairs bred on the reserve this year with counts of up to 40 during December in winter stubble fields around the reserve.

Sand Martin: 3 on 20^th March was first of the year 10+ on 1^st October were the last of the year.

Swallow: 3 on 4^th April were the first of the year with 10 on 8^th October being the last of the year.

House Martin: 1 on 4^th April was first of the year with 20 on 4^th October being the last reports of the year.

Meadow Pipit: Present all year round on or around the reserve in small numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding on site.

Rock Pipit: 1 on 13^th April was only sighting of the year.

Yellow Wagtail: 5 on 20^th and 21^st April were the first of the year with a ‘Blue-headed’ bird also present on 20^th. 2 pairs present by end of May. At least 1 pair

seen throughout June. In July 1 on 8^th with 3 juveniles seen on 26^th to 29^th. In August 1 on 2^nd and 5^th with 2 on 23^rd. In September 1 on 6^th with

2 on 23^rd being the last of the year.

Grey Wagtail: 1 on 26^th January, pair on 20^th and 22^nd March 1 on 25^th and pair again on 31^st. In April 1 on 8^th and 17^th with pair on 18^th. 1 on 16^th May. In June a

juvenile was seen on 18^th, 21^st and 27^th. 1 juvenile on 12^th July. In August 1 on 31^st. 1 on 29^th September. In October 1 on 4^th, 6^th, 12^th and 15^th

with 2 on 21^st. In November 1 in flight on 15^th.

Pied Wagtail: Seen in every month of the year with a flock of 38 seen on 29^th January.

Wren: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding in perimeter hedgerows.

Dunnock: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

Robin: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

Whinchat: 1 on 22^nd August and 10^th September were the only sightings of the year.

Stonechat: 2 from 25^th to 28^th January, in February 1 on 3^rd and 4^th with 2 on 5^th. In March male on 24^th. 1 on 10^th May. In October 1 on 5^th, 7^th and 9^th with a pair

on 10^th, 1 on 11^th and 14^th. 1 on 17^th November. In December 1 on 7^th, 26^th and 30^th.

Wheatear: 1 on 23^rd April was first of the year with 1 also on 29^th. 2 on 5^th May, 1 on 8^th May. 1 on 19^th July. 1 on 9^th September was last sighting of the year.

Blackbird: Resident throughout the year with occasional small influxes of birds in the autumn with a few pairs Breeding.

Fieldfare: Small numbers seen on and off throughout both winter periods. 2 unseasonal birds were seen on 12^th May.

Song Thrush: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers with probable the odd pair breeding.

Redwing: Small numbers seen on and off throughout both winter periods. 200+ on 18^th October was the biggest day count.

Mistle Thrush: Seen on and off in all months of the year in small numbers.

Grasshopper Warbler: 1 ‘reeling’ on 31^st July and again on 2^nd August was only second reserve record.

Sedge Warbler: 1 on 22^nd April was first of the year with 3+ by end of the month. Up to 10 pairs may have bred this year. 1 on 8^th September was last report of

the year.

Reed Warbler: 1 on 25^th April was first of the year. Up to 6 pairs may have bred this year. 1 on 26^th September was last report of the year.

Lesser Whitethroat: 1 on 23^rd April was first of the year. Pair seen feeding 3 young on 25^th June. 1 on 12^th September was last of the year.

Whitethroat: 3 on 22^nd April were the first of the year. Up to 10 pairs breeding around the reserve. 11 on 12^th September being the last reports of the year.

Garden Warbler: 1 on 25^th May was first of the year. 1 on 26^th July being the last report.

Blackcap: Male on 14^th January. 3+ birds present throughout April, May and June. The last reports of the year were in September with 1 on 13^th, 21^st and 27^th.

Chiffchaff: 1 on 25^th March was first of the year with 2 on 31^st. In September 1 on 12^th and 26^th. In October 2 on 2^nd were the last of the year.

Willow Warbler: 1 on 31^st was first of the year. At least 2 pairs are thought to have bred. The last of the year was seen in mid September.

Goldcrest: 1 on 1^st June. 1 on 21^st August. 1 on 27^th September. 1 on 12^th October. A few seen on and off in November and December.

Spotted Flycatcher: 1 on 26^th April was first of the year with 1 on 10^th and 30^th May.

Long-tailed Tit: A year round resident in varying numbers with a few pairs breeding.

Willow Tit: 1 on 3^rd February and 1 on 30^th June.

Coal Tit: 1 on 23^rd March, 1 on 28th and 30^th November.

Blue Tit: Resident all year with at least 5 pairs breeding in the nest boxes on the reserve.

Great Tit: Resident all year with at least 4 pairs breeding in the nest boxes on the reserve.

Jay: 1 on 29^th November was the only report of the year.

Magpie: Resident on and around the reserve all year round with flocks of up to 7 seen at times, with at least 1 pair breeding.

Jackdaw: Resident on and around the reserve all year round.

Rook: Resident on and around the reserve all year round, often large numbers seen at roost times.

Carrion Crow: Resident on and around the reserve all year round, with 1 or 2 pairs breeding on the reserve.

Starling: Resident on and around the reserve all year round, with flocks of up to 10,000 birds starting to use the growing reedbed as a roost in early winter.

House Sparrow: Seen in most months of the year in small numbers but still an uncommon visitor to the reserve from nearby village.

Tree Sparrow: Resident in varying numbers throughout the year with several pairs breeding in the nest boxes provided, a wintering flock of at least 100 birds

were seen throughout January, February and March.

Chaffinch: Year round resident of the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding, but a winter flock of 50+ birds from January to March was

noteworthy.

Brambling: 1 on 10^th January. In February female on 3^rd and male on 15^th. In March female seen on 4^th, 8^th, 13^th, 15^th, 21^st and 30^th. 3 on 22^nd April. In November

2 females on 28^th and 1 on 30^th.

Greenfinch: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

Goldfinch: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

Siskin: A flock of 100+ present throughout January numbers then dwindled to 18 on 21^st February and only a few seen during March. In September 1 on 13^th,

10+ on 19^th and 20+ on 28^th. In October 6 on 2^nd, 4 on 4^th, 2 on 8^th, 10 on 15^th, 30 on 18^th, 10 on 21^st, 40 on 22^nd, 20 on 27^th and 10 on 30^th. A small flock

present during November with 20+ on 28^th. In December 5 on 1^st and 2^nd, 30+ on 14^th, 10 on 17^th and 18^th with 6 on 30^th.

Linnet: Present on and off all year in small numbers.

Lesser Redpoll: Small flock present throughout January with 8+ on 4^th. In February 1 on 9^th, 2 on 15^th, 10 on 18^th and 4 on 20^th. In October 1 on 10^th, and 5 on

27^th. In November 2 on 16^th and 1 on 29^th. In December 4 on 6^th, 2 on 7^th, 3 on 9^th, 2 on 17^th and 1 on 31^st.

Mealy Redpoll: 1 showed very well with Lesser Redpolls on 5^th and 6^th of January.

Crossbill: 2 birds calling as they flew South over reserve on 29^th November, and were a new species for the reserve.

Bullfinch: In January 1 on 3^rd, 4 on 11^th, 2 on 12^th and 14^th with 1 on 23^rd. 1 on 25^th June. 1 on 21^st July. In August 1 on 11^th and 30^th. 1 on 17^th September. 1 on

28^th October. A small flock seen on and off in November with 5 on 29^th. In December 4 on 1^st, 1 on 2^nd, 2 on 4^th, 10 on 6^th, 4 on 9^th, 3 on 12^th, 1 on 21^st,

2 on 25^th and 26^th.

Yellowhammer: Seen in every month of the year in small numbers but a wintering flock of 50+ throughout January, 20+ throughout February and March.

Reed Bunting: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding.

Corn Bunting: 3+ on February 9^th were first of the year with 10 on 28^th. At least 5 birds singing around perimeter of reserve through June and July with an

adult and juvenile seen together on 18^th July. Birds then seen on and off to end of year in small numbers with a maximum count of 20+ on 26^th

November. In December 1 on 17^th and 26^th.

In total 155 species of bird were recorded on or from the reserve in 2008 with 2 new species for the reserve
