Bird Records 2008  For North Cave Wetlands.

 

Mute Swan: Year round resident on the reserve with 1 pair attempting to breed but failed, a peak count of 17 seen in January.   

 

Whooper Swan: In March 19 on 28th (17 adults and 2 juveniles). 1 adult on 11th April. In October 7 on 17th, 5 on 18th, 7 flew South on 19th, 2 on 22nd and 23rd,

                            with 8 also flying South on 22nd. In November 1 on 1st, 3 on 5th and 6th, 13 flew North on 7th, 5 inc 3 juveniles on 11th, 1 flew South on 13th and

                           14th, 3 on 19th and 26th, 4 from 27th to 1st December with 2 remaining to 7th December. 5 flew East on 28th December.  

 

Pink-Footed Goose: 2 with Greylag flock on 13th, 14th, 16th, 19th, 3 on 24th, 1 on 25th, 8 on 26th, 150+ flew North-West on 28th. In February 4 on 12th, 19th and

                                   20th, 13 on 27th and 70+ flew North on 28th. In April 3 on 6th, and 2 on 7th till end of month. In August 1 on 5th to 8th. In September 8 with

                                   Greylag flock on 28th with another 45 flying East over reserve, 16 with Greylag flock on 29th and 21 on 30th. In October 30 South on 5th,

                                   150 South on 12th, 20 on 16th, 32 South and 600+ North on 18th, 100 South on 25th, 60 South on 27th, 13 on 29th, 6 on 30th and 8 on 31st. In

                                   November 20 on 2nd and 3rd, 12 on 4th, 30 on 11th, c400 in stubble just North of reserve on 13th to 16th, c1000 flew South on 19th, c2000 flew

                                   North on 21st, c1000 flew South on 22nd, 5 on 28th and 1 on 30th. In December 4 on 9th, 45 flying South on 11th, 7 on 13th, 6 on 17th, 10 on

                                   19th, 8 on 24th.

 

White-fronted Goose: 3 birds present for 15mins on 2nd January then flew off North.                                 

                                    

Greylag Goose: A year round resident on the reserve with 6+ pairs breeding successfully, WeBS counts of 122 in January, 1 in February, 10 in March, 627 in

                           October with a peak count for the year of 700+ seen throughout November and 150 in December.

                            

Canada Goose:  221 on 25th October was a new site record count. 70 on 16th November.

 

Barnacle Goose: 1 of ‘unknown origin’ during September. 2 birds of ‘unknown origin’ in October. Up to 8 birds of ‘unknown origin’ seen on and off during

                             November.

 

Egyptian Goose: 1 present on and off from 25th October to 29th November.

 

Brent Goose: Adult ‘Dark-bellied’ birds present on 23rd April and 9th November.

 

Ross’s Goose: An escaped bird flew South with Greylag’s on 6th September and was present on reserve for about an hour on 9th.

                               

Shelduck: 43 present by end of February. 2 pairs bred with broods of 8 and 13 but only 1 or 2 young surviving to fledge. 3 on 28th November were the first

                  returning birds after their annual moult. Seen on and off in December with 8 on 1st and 14 on 14th.

                            

Wigeon: 4 on 12th February. In March female on 3rd, pair on 14th, 2 males and a female on 16th.  1 male seen on and off from 3rd May to end of June. In August 1

               was present from 17th onwards. 6 on 4th September. In October 2 on 4th, 2 on 10th, 1 on 11th, 4 on 30th and 8 on 31st. Seen on and off in November  with 6

               on 1st and 5th being the highest count. In December pair on 4th, 7th, 26th and 27th.

               

Gadwall: A year round resident with upto 5 pairs breeding successfully raising many young. WeBS Counts produced 14 in January, 36 in February, 17 in March,

                34 in October, 27 in November and 12 in December.

 

Teal: Now a year round resident on the reserve but with no sign of breeding having taken place, WeBS counts of 221 in January, 118 in February, 36 in March,

          then WeBS count of 198 in October, 227 in November and 184 in December.

 

Green-winged Teal: Drake moulting out of eclipse on 9th November was a new species for the reserve.

 

Mallard: A year round resident with WeBS counts of 94 in January, 110 in February, 44 in March, 223 in October, 213 in November, 166 in  December. Also

                at least 10 pairs bred raising many young.

 

Pintail: Male on 14th January, 2nd and 16th February, female present from 26th September to 20th October. In December 2 males on 9th.

             

Garganey: Pair seen on the very early date of 26th February. Drake on 30th April. Juvenile present from 21st August to 12th September and 2 briefly on 25th

                  September.                  

 

Shoveler: Present in every month of the year with WeBS counts of 25  in January, 21 in February, 21 in March,  27 in October, 15 in November and 4  in

                 December. At least 2  pair breeding successfully raising young.

 

Red-crested Pochard: 3 drakes, 2 in eclipse from 14th to 19th July.

 

Pochard: A year round resident on the reserve with WeBS counts of 21 in January, 13 in February, 14 in March, 11 in October, 28 in November and  3 in  

                 December.

 

Tufted Duck: A year round resident with several pairs breeding with WeBS counts of 73 in January, 87 in February, 30 in March, in October, 59 in November, 8  

                          in December.  

 

Scaup: Female on 12th January. Female on 24th February, Female on 10th April.

 

Common Scoter: Female on 26th July and 31st December were the only reports of the year.

 

 

 

 

Goldeneye: 3, 2 males and a female on 2nd January with the female present on and off till end of March. Immature male on 27th April.  1 or 2 birds seen on and

                    off  from 1st to 20th November. In December 1 on 1st, pair from 15th to end of year.

 

Goosander: 2 or 3 birds present on and off throughout January with 5 on 25th. Birds seen on and off throughout February with 6 on 27th. Seen on and off in    

                     March with 6 on 20th being the highest count. In November 1 on 9th, 15th and 20th. In December 1 on 4th, 22nd, 29th with 3 on 30th.

 

Ruddy Duck: Very few now being seen on reserve due to shooting policy with this species! With 2 on 17th March. Pair on 18th and 19th April. And a few autumn

                         records of single birds.

 

Red-legged Partridge: Resident breeding species in varying numbers around the reserve with a peak count of up to 30 birds seen at times.

 

Grey Partridge: Very scarce this year with 3 on 24th April. 1 on 30th May and the odd autumn sighting.

 

Quail: Mail singing from wheat field just North of reserve early morning and late evening on 26th July.

 

Pheasant: A year round resident in small numbers with a few pairs breeding around the reserve.

                                                                                                   

Little Grebe: A year round resident on the reserve with WeBS counts of 10 in January, 10 in February, 15 in March, 36 in October, 12 in November and 3 in

                        December. At least 5 pairs bred successfully.

 

Great Crested Grebe: Present in every month of the year with 5 pairs successfully breeding.

 

Black-necked Grebe: Pair in breeding plumage on 25th April was the only sighting of the year.

 

Gannet:  2nd year bird flew over reserve on 4th October.

 

Cormorant: Seen in every month of the year with a maximum day count of 6 in December.

 

Little Egret: In July 3 on 13th, 1 on 28th, 29th and 30th. In August 1 on 1st to 12th and again on 16th to 19th. In October 1 on 28th.

  

Grey Heron: Single birds seen on and off in every month of the year except February.                    

                                            

Red Kite: 1 or 2 birds seen along ridge to East of reserve in every month of the year. 3 birds together flew East over the reserve on 16th March. 6 in the air

                  together on 10th September was highest day count of the year.             

                 

Marsh Harrier: Female on 28th February was first of the year. Female on 7th March. Male on 6th and 7th April. 1 on 22nd May. Male on 17th June. 1 on 4th and

                            16th July. In August 1 on 3rd, 9th, 27th and 29th. In September 1 on 3rd, 6th, 11th, 12th and 30th. In October 1 on 2nd, 4th and 12th.  In December 1 on

                            3rd.

                       

Goshawk: 1 seen just North of reserve on 9th March.

                 

Sparrowhawk: Seen regularly throughout and in every month of the year mostly just single birds but 2 together occasionally, hunting the autumn Starling roost.

 

Buzzard: Several birds now resident in woodland along ridge to east of reserve with birds seen regularly from the reserve and occasionally overflying the

                 reserve with up to a dozen birds seen in the air together in autumn.

 

Osprey: In September 1 on 13th,  2 on 14th, and 1 on 18th.

 

Merlin:. Female on 4th February. 1 on 24th March. Female on 12th April. Female on 30th August. Male on 7th October.

 

Hobby: 2 on 28th April were the first of the year. In May 1 on 9th, 13th and 18th. In June 1 on 17th, 20th, 25th, 27th and 29th. In July 1 on 7th. In August  1 on 3rd, 6th,  

              7th, 10th, 27th and 29th. In September 1 on 4th, 5th and 6th with 2 on 7th. 1 on 5th October was last of the year.

 

Peregrine: 2 together on 12th January, 1 on 3rd February. In March 1 on 9th, 21st, 24th and 25th. In April 1 on 4th and 7th. In June 1 on 1st and 18th. 1 on 31st August.

                  In September 1 on 3rd  and 28th. In October 1 on 11th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd. In November 1 on 11th, 13th and 20th. In December 1 on 26th and

                  27th.

                  

Water Rail: 1 on 9th and 24th March. 1 on 20th April. 1 on 26th July. In August 1 seen on and off from 22nd to month’s end. In September 1 on 4th. 1 on 23rd

                     October. In December 1 on 12th and 30th.

 

Moorhen: A year round resident with several pairs breeding and maximum WeBS counts of 8 in January, 12 in February, 27 in March, 14 in October, 17 in

                  November and 10 in December.

 

Coot: A year round resident with several pairs breeding with WeBS counts of 139 in January, 131 in February, 139 in March, 102 in October, 102 in November

           and 76 in December.   

 

Common Crane: 3 birds circled just south of reserve for c20mins on 11th May before flying off high North over the reserve. (4 Had flown over Blacktoft Sands

                              RSPB shortly beforehand).

 

Oystercatcher: 1 on 25th January was first of the year. 36 by 28th February. 40 on 6th March. No evidence of breeding this year.

 

 

 

                          

Avocet: 2 on 2nd March were the first of the year with 10 by 21st. Up to 39 birds seen during April with 6 pairs sitting by end of month. The first chicks were 4 on

             24th May. In June at least 11 pairs sitting plus 8 young seen on 4th but only 1 young present on 9th with the rest appearing to have been predated. Last

             sighting of the year was 1 on 4th July.  

 

Little Ringed Plover: 2 on 31st March were the first of the year. 1 or 2 seen on and off throughout April. 4 on 4th May. In August up to 5 juveniles and 4 adults

                                     were seen and  were thought to have been breed on the new workings just south of the reserve. 1 juvenile still present till 11th September

                                     which was the last sighting of the year.

                                     

Ringed Plover: 1 on 8th February was first of the year with 4 by end of month and throughout March, then seen on and off throughout the summer. 3 on 4th

                           October were the last of the year. At least 2 pairs attempted to breed but appeared to have been unsuccessful.

                                          

Golden Plover: Seen in every month of the year except June with 60 on 13th January. Numbers started to build up through August with 95+ on 30th. Small

                           numbers seen on and off in September, October, November and December.

 

Grey Plover: 3 flew East on 17th September with 1 on 12th October and 1 on 3rd December.

 

Lapwing: Year round resident with at least 40 pairs breeding on reserve raising many young. WeBS counts of 200 in January, 75 in February, 120 in March, 360

                  in October, 285 in November and 57 in December.

 

Sanderling: 2 briefly on 5th August.

 

Little Stint: 1 on 26th to 28th July. 1 on 5th August.

 

Dunlin: 1 on 8th March was first of the year then seen on and off throughout March with a high count of 6 on 20th. 2 at end of April.  Up to 4 seen on and off

               throughout May. In June 1 on 15th.  In July 1 on 1st, 2 on 7th, 17th and 25th and 1 on 27th. In August 1 on 5th, 2 on 26th to 30th. In September 2 on 4th and

               12th, 1 on 14th, 16th and 27th.  In October 2 on 1st and 7th, 1 on 15th and 26th. In November 2 on 2nd and 1 on 23rd.

             

Ruff:  Male on 26th to 29th April was first of the year. In May female seen on 13th to 17th.  In July 3 on 1st, 1 on 2nd and 24th. In August 1 on 14th, 18th and 24th. 1

           on 18th September. 1 on 19th October. In November 1 on 2nd and 15th.

 

Jack Snipe: In February 3 on 10th, 15th and 23rd.  Singles seen on 17th and 24th October, 21st November, and 1 on 25th December.                     

 

Snipe: 40+ on 18th January. 24 in February. 3 in March. In July 10+ on 26th. 20+ by end of August. 100+ by end of September and throughout October. In

            November 30+ seen at times.

           

Woodcock: 1 on 2nd January and 1 on 8th November.

                                                            

Black-Tailed Godwit: 3 on 28th March were the first of the year. Singles seen on and off throughout April with 5 on 4th. In July 1 on 17th, 28th and 29th with 2 on

                                      31st. 1 on 11th October.

 

Bar-tailed Godwit: 1 on 26th April was only sighting of the year.

 

Whimbrel:. 1 on 19th and 20th April was first of the year with 2 on 21st, 22nd, 28th and 29th. In May 2 on 10th, 1 on 16th and 8 on 26th. 1 on 24th August. 1 on 24th

                     September was last sighting of the year.

 

Curlew: 61 on 1st January. 33 on 19th February. Several flocks moving South over reserve in August with 81 on 6th and 40+ on 12th. Small numbers continued to

               pass through reserve in September, October, November and December.

 

Spotted Redshank: Adult in summer plumage on 1st May. Juvenile on 12th September with another juvenile on 17th to 19th.1 on 16th November.

 

Redshank: Wintering flock of 74 on 26th January. 42 on 10th February. 10 on 8th March. 6 on 19th August. 6 on 30th October, 15 on 16th November and 5 on 14th

                    December. No sign of breeding this year.

 

Greenshank: 1 on 7th May was first of the year with 3 on 13th and 1 on 20th. In June 1 on 30th. In July 1 on 1st and 2nd, 19th, 24th and 27th. In August 1 on 6th and

                        9th with 8 briefly on 18th, 1 on 29th and 30th. In September 1 on 2nd and 4th were the last of the year. 

                      

Green Sandpiper: 1 on 6th May was first of the year. In June 1 on 25th and 29th. Seen on and off throughout July with 5 seen on 22nd. Up to 4 birds seen on and

                                off in August. In September 2 on 12th, 1 on 20th with 4 on 22nd and 25th.
                                                               

Wood Sandpiper: 1 on 6th May, 1 on 10th and 18th July and 1 on 31st August.

 

Common Sandpiper: 1 on 14th April was first of the year with upto 3 seen on some days later in the month. 1 or 2 seen during May. In June 1 on 30th. Seen daily

                                     throughout July with at least 8 on 28th. Seen throughout August in small numbers. In September single bird seen on and off all month. 1 on

                                     1st October was last report of the year.

 

Mediterranean Gull: An adult in near full summer plumage on 22nd February. 1 on 26th March and a 1st summer bird on 17th and 18th April with a pair of 2nd

                                     summer birds present from 18th April to 7th May. An adult summer plumaged bird on 29th and 30th June and 1st July. 1 on 23rd December.

 

Little Gull: Immature on 23rd April was first of the year with same or another on 28th. 3, 1st summer birds on 31st May. 1st summer birds seen in June were 1 on

                    1st and 2nd, 2 on 3rd, 1 on 4th,6th and 7th.1 on 11th July.  

 

Black-headed Gull: Seen all year round on the reserve with a colony of c120 pairs breeding, raising many young.

 

 

Common Gull: Seen on and off in every month of the year in small numbers.

 

Herring Gull: Seen on and off in small numbers in every month of the year.

 

Lesser Black-backed Gull: 1 on 6th January was first of the year then seen on and off for rest of year in small numbers with up to 20 seen at times.

 

Greater Black-backed Gull: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers with up to 50 birds present on occasion

 

Common Tern:.1 on 16th April was first of the year. Present throughout May with a maximum of 13 on 23rd. By end of June 5 pairs nesting. In July only 1 pair

                            were successful raising 2 young all the other pairs failed due to rising water levels. The last sighting of the year was 1 on 1st September.

 

Arctic Tern:  In July 1 on 19th and 21st with 2 on 12th August.

 

Black Tern: Adult summer plumaged bird seen on 9th May was only report of the year.

 

Stock Dove: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers around the reserve.

 

Woodpigeon: Present around the reserve all year in varying numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding on the reserve.

 

Turtle Dove: 1 on 16th May was first of the year with 2 on 30th. In June 1 on 1st and 2 on 6th. 1 on 20th July was last sighting of the year.

 

Cuckoo:  1 heard on 1st May was the first of the year with 1 also seen on 17th. In June 1 on 7th and 14th. In July a juvenile was seen on and off from 18th to 27th.

                 In August the juvenile was seen again on 2nd and was the last sighting of the year.

 

Barn Owl: The pair resident around farm just to north of reserve could been seen regularly hunting on and around the reserve mainly a single bird but 2 birds

                   seen on a few occasions.

              

Little Owl: The pair resident just too west of reserve seen on and off all year. With a juvenile seen on the reserve on and off throughout June

 

Tawny Owl: 1 found roosting on 3rd December was a rare reserve sighting.

 

Short-eared Owl: 1 hunting over reserve on 27th August.

 

Swift: First of year was 1 on 17th April with 1 on 19th September being the last of the year. A peak count of 400+ birds feeding over reserve on 21st May.

 

Kingfisher: 1 on 17th February was first of the year. In May 1 on 3rd, 5th, 6th and 29th. In June a pair with 3 young was seen from 23rd into July. Up to 3  birds

                     seen  on off throughout the rest of July, August, September and October. In November and December only seen occasionally.  

 

Green Woodpecker: Present throughout the year, mostly single bird sightings but 2 seen together on many dates and 3 together on a few occasions. In July a

                                    juvenile was seen on and off with 2 juveniles seen on 23rd.

                                   

Great Spotted Woodpecker: Seen throughout the year mainly single birds but pair together on occasions.

 

Skylark: Several pairs bred on the reserve this year with counts of up to 40 during December in winter stubble fields around the reserve.

 

Sand Martin: 3 on 20th March was first of the year 10+ on 1st October were the last of the year.

 

Swallow: 3 on 4th April were the first of the year with 10 on 8th October being the last of the year.

 

House Martin: 1 on 4th April was first of the year with 20 on 4th October being the last reports of the year.

 

Meadow Pipit: Present all year round on or around the reserve in small numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding on site.

                                               

Rock Pipit: 1 on 13th April was only sighting of the year.

 

Yellow Wagtail: 5 on 20th and 21st April were the first of the year with a ‘Blue-headed’ bird also present on 20th. 2 pairs present by end of May. At least 1 pair

                            seen throughout June. In July 1 on 8th with 3 juveniles seen on 26th to 29th. In August 1 on 2nd and 5th with 2 on 23rd. In September 1 on 6th with

                            2 on 23rd being the last of the year.

 

Grey Wagtail: 1 on 26th January, pair on 20th and 22nd March 1 on 25th and pair again on 31st. In April 1 on 8th and 17th with pair on 18th. 1 on 16th May. In June a

                          juvenile was seen on 18th, 21st and 27th. 1 juvenile on 12th July. In August 1 on 31st. 1 on 29th September. In October 1 on 4th, 6th, 12th and 15th

                          with 2 on 21st. In November 1 in flight on 15th.

 

Pied Wagtail: Seen in every month of the year with a  flock of 38 seen on 29th January.

 

Wren: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding in perimeter hedgerows.

 

Dunnock: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

 

Robin: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

 

Whinchat: 1 on 22nd August and 10th September were the only sightings of the year.

 

 

Stonechat: 2 from 25th to 28th January, in February 1 on 3rd and 4th with 2 on 5th. In March male on 24th. 1 on 10th May. In October 1 on 5th, 7th and 9th with a pair

                   on 10th, 1 on 11th and 14th. 1 on 17th November. In December 1 on 7th, 26th and 30th.

                 

Wheatear: 1 on 23rd April was first of the year with 1 also on 29th. 2 on 5th May, 1 on 8th May. 1 on 19th July. 1 on 9th September was last sighting of the year.

 

Blackbird: Resident throughout the year with occasional small influxes of birds in the autumn with a few pairs Breeding.

 

Fieldfare: Small numbers seen on and off throughout both winter periods. 2 unseasonal birds were seen on 12th May.

                 

Song Thrush: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers with probable the odd pair breeding.

 

Redwing:  Small numbers seen on and off throughout both winter periods. 200+ on 18th October was the biggest day count.            

 

Mistle Thrush: Seen on and off in all months of the year in small numbers.

 

Grasshopper Warbler: 1 ‘reeling’ on 31st July and again on 2nd August was only second reserve record.

 

Sedge Warbler: 1 on 22nd April was first of the year with 3+ by end of the month. Up to 10 pairs may have bred this year. 1 on 8th September was last report of

                            the year.

 

Reed Warbler: 1 on 25th April was first of the year. Up to 6 pairs may have bred this year.  1 on 26th September was last report of the year.

                                                    

Lesser Whitethroat: 1 on 23rd April was first of the year. Pair seen feeding 3 young on 25th June. 1 on 12th September was last of the year.

                                    

Whitethroat: 3 on 22nd April were the first of the year. Up to 10 pairs breeding around the reserve. 11 on 12th September being the last reports of the year.

 

Garden Warbler: 1 on 25th May was first of the year. 1 on 26th July being the last report.  

 

Blackcap: Male on 14th January. 3+ birds present throughout April, May and June. The last reports of the year were in September with 1 on 13th, 21st and  27th.

 

Chiffchaff: 1 on 25th March was first of the year with 2 on 31st. In September 1 on 12th and 26th. In October 2 on 2nd were the last of the year.

 

Willow Warbler: 1 on 31st was first of the year. At least 2 pairs are thought to have bred. The last of the year was seen in mid September.

                     

Goldcrest: 1 on 1st June. 1 on 21st August. 1 on 27th September. 1 on 12th October. A few seen on and off in November and December.

 

Spotted Flycatcher: 1 on 26th April was first of the year with  1 on 10th and 30th May.

 

Long-tailed Tit: A year round resident in varying numbers with a few pairs breeding.

 

Willow Tit: 1 on 3rd February and 1 on 30th June.

 

Coal Tit: 1 on 23rd March, 1 on 28th and 30th November.

 

Blue Tit: Resident all year with at least 5 pairs breeding in the nest boxes on the reserve.

 

Great Tit: Resident all year with at least 4 pairs breeding in the nest boxes on the reserve.

 

Jay: 1 on 29th November was the only report of the year.

 

Magpie: Resident on and around the reserve all year round with flocks of up to 7 seen at times, with at least 1 pair breeding.

 

Jackdaw: Resident on and around the reserve all year round.

 

Rook: Resident on and around the reserve all year round, often large numbers seen at roost times.

 

Carrion Crow: Resident on and around the reserve all year round, with  1 or 2 pairs breeding on the reserve.

 

Starling: Resident on and around the reserve all year round, with flocks of up to 10,000 birds starting to use the growing reedbed as a roost in early winter.

 

House Sparrow: Seen in most months of the year in small numbers but still an uncommon visitor to the reserve from nearby village.

                                                                                                                                                                      

Tree Sparrow: Resident in varying numbers throughout the year with several pairs breeding in the nest boxes provided, a wintering flock of at least 100 birds

                          were seen throughout  January, February and March.

 

Chaffinch: Year round resident of the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs  breeding, but a winter flock of 50+ birds from January to March was

                    noteworthy.

 

Brambling: 1 on 10th January. In February female on 3rd and male on 15th. In March female seen on 4th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 21st and 30th. 3 on 22nd April. In November

                     2 females on 28th and 1 on 30th.

 

Greenfinch: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

 

 

Goldfinch: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

 

Siskin:  A flock of 100+ present throughout January numbers then dwindled to 18 on 21st February and only a few seen during March.  In September 1 on 13th,

             10+ on 19th and 20+ on 28th.  In October 6 on 2nd, 4 on 4th, 2 on 8th, 10 on 15th, 30 on 18th, 10 on 21st, 40 on 22nd, 20 on 27th and 10 on 30th. A small flock

             present during November with 20+ on 28th. In December 5 on 1st and 2nd, 30+ on 14th, 10 on 17th and 18th with 6 on 30th.

           

Linnet: Present on and off all year in small numbers.

 

Lesser Redpoll: Small flock present throughout January with 8+ on 4th. In February 1 on 9th, 2 on 15th, 10 on 18th and 4 on 20th. In October 1 on 10th, and 5 on

                            27th. In  November 2 on 16th and 1 on 29th. In December 4 on 6th, 2 on 7th, 3 on 9th, 2 on 17th and 1 on 31st.

                           

Mealy Redpoll: 1 showed very well with Lesser Redpolls on 5th and 6th of  January.

 

Crossbill: 2 birds calling as they flew South over reserve on 29th November, and were a new species for the reserve.

 

Bullfinch: In January 1 on 3rd, 4 on 11th, 2 on 12th and 14th with 1 on 23rd.  1 on 25th June. 1 on 21st July. In August 1 on 11th and 30th. 1 on 17th September. 1 on

                  28th October. A small flock seen on and off in November with 5 on 29th. In December 4 on 1st, 1 on 2nd, 2 on 4th, 10 on 6th, 4 on 9th, 3 on 12th, 1 on 21st,

                  2 on 25th and 26th.

                

Yellowhammer: Seen in every month of the year in small numbers but a wintering flock of 50+ throughout January, 20+ throughout February and March.   

 

Reed Bunting: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding.

 

Corn Bunting: 3+ on February 9th were first of the year with 10 on 28th. At least 5 birds singing around perimeter of reserve through June and July with an

                          adult and juvenile seen together on 18th July. Birds then seen on and off to end of year in small numbers with a maximum count of 20+ on 26th

                          November. In December 1 on 17th and 26th.

                                              

Summary:

   In total 155 species of bird were recorded on or from the reserve in 2008 with 2 new species for the reserve

   Green-winged Teal and Crossbill.
