Bird Records 2007  For North Cave Wetlands.

 

Mute Swan: Year round resident on the reserve with 1 pair breeding  fledging 2 young, with a maximum count of  upto 10 others seen on any one date.

 

Whooper Swan: In March 29 flew North-West on 16th, in October 2 on 20th, 8 inc 3 young on 28th, pair with 4 young on 29th, 2 adults on 30th, in November 7 on

                            4th and 3 on 10th.

 

Pink-Footed Goose: In January 40 flew North-West on 14th, c80 flew North-West on 19th, in February 1 on 7th, 9th, 11th and 12th, 11 on 14th and 15th, in March 4

                                   flew on 7th, in April 170 flew North-West on 6th, 1 on 10th to 18th with Greylag flock, in May 1 on 15th, in August 2 with Greylag flock on

                                   26th to September 9th, also in September several skeins totaling c350 birds flew South-East on 15th, in October 80 flew South-East on 6th, a

                                   flock of 42 present from 7th to 11th, c800 flew South on 26th with 10 South on 28th, in November 7 on 4th, then 1 on and off from 22nd to 10th

                                   December, then a skein of c80 were the first to be seen flying back North on 31st December.

 

White-fronted Goose: 2 adult ’Greenland’ race birds present on 23rd, 24th and 26th November and again on 1st November.                                   

                                    

Greylag Goose: A year round resident on the reserve with 6+ pairs breeding successfully, with a peak count for the year of 700+ on 15th September.

                            

Canada Goose: Present in small numbers throughout the year with a site record count of 107 seen on September 9th.

 

Barnacle Goose: Upto 3 birds of ‘unknown origin’seen on and off during October.

 

Brent Goose: 1 on 10th October was only sighting of the year.

                               

Shelduck: Seen in every month of the year except August. 148 on March 18th was the highest count of the year, a pair with 9 young on 20th May was the only

                   evidence of breeding this year, with just 1 juvenile was then seen later in the summer. 

                            

Wigeon: Small flock present throughout the first winter period peaking at 17 on 3rd April, present again in second winter period peaking at 44 on 29th September.

              

Gadwall: A year round resident with WeBS counts of 55 in January, 31 in February, 27 in March, 71 in October, 40 in November and  24 in December. Also at

                 least 4 pair bred successfully.

 

Teal: Now a year round resident on the reserve but no sign of breeding having taken place, WeBS count of  212 in January, 284 in February, 89 in March, just 1

          pair present through the summer months, then WeBS count of 79 in October, 202 in November and 312 in December.

 

Mallard: A year round resident with WeBS counts of 217  in January, 113 in February, 34 in March, 142 in October, 217 in November, 350 in  December. Also

                at least 10 pairs bred raising many young.

 

Pintail: Male on 1st January, 2 males and 2 females on 26th February, pair on 14th October, in November male on 3rd, 10th, 13th, 15th to 19th, in December male

              again on 17th,18th, 25th and 30th.

 

Garganey: Drake on 22nd May was the first of the year with pair on 29th May, in June female on 18th to 21st, male on 22nd and pair on 23rd, female on 7th August was th                        was last of the year.

 

Shoveler: Present in every month of the year with WeBS counts of 11  in January, 12 in February, 19 in March, 27 in October, 6 in November and 18 in

                 December. At least 1 pair breeding successfully raising 5 young.

 

Pochard: A year round resident on the reserve with WeBS counts of  38 in January, 32 in February, 4 in March, 49 in October, 7 in November and  in 8

                 December.  Also in September a female with a blue nasal band BF2 seen from 7th for a few days had been marked whilst on her nest at

                 Saint-Philbert-De-Grande-Lieu, France on 1st June 2007.

 

Tufted Duck: A year round resident with several pairs breeding with WeBS counts of 93 in January, 46 in February, 48 in March, 8 in October, 44 in November,  

                         76 in December.  

 

Scaup: In December immature seen on 5th and 6th, then a female and different immature bird present from 7th  to 9th.

 

Common Scoter: 10 birds, 7 males and 3 females on March 29th, in April a female present on 8th and 9th.

 

Goldeneye: In January male on 1st, pair on 13th to 26th with female then seen on and off til 5th of April with upto 2 others seen on a few occasions, female again

                     present from 12th November on and off until 10th December.

 

Goosander: Seen on and off from January 1st through to 3rd April, then again from 26th October on and off until the years end with the highest count being 6 on

                     20th February.

 

Ruddy Duck: In January 2 females on 3rd, in February male from 21st to 28th, in March 1 on 2nd, 2 on 3rd, 1 on 24th, pair on 28th, upto 8 seen on and off

                        throughout April and May then only the odd sighting through the rest of the year after gunmen arrived on site in June in a national campaign to try

                        and eradicate the species from Britain!

 

Red-legged Partridge: Resident in varying numbers around the reserve with a peak count of  upto 30 seen at times. With several young seen during the summer

                                       months.

 

Grey Partridge: In January 7 on 13th and 6 on 17th were the highest counts of the year then seen on and off throughout the rest of the year.

 

 

Pheasant: A year round resident in small numbers with a few pairs breeding around the reserve.

                                                                                                   

Little Grebe: A year round resident on the reserve with WeBS counts of 6 in January, 10 in February, 6 in March, 28 in October, 15 in November and 17 in

                        December. At least 5 pairs bred successfully.

 

Great Crested Grebe: Present in every month of the year with 3 pairs attempting to nest of which only 1 pair was successful raising 2 young. The maximum

                                       count being 7 on 18th March.

 

Gannet: A juvenile circled over reserve for 10 minutes on 27th September before flying off.

 

Cormorant: Seen in every month of the year with a maximum count of  6 on 10th July.

 

Little Egret: 1 on 29th April was first of the year, 1 on 13th May, 1 on 15th July, in August 1 on 12th, 25th and 27th with 3 on 29th (site record count), 1 on 30th to

                      September 2nd and again on 7th, final sighting of the year was 1 on 1st November.

  

Grey Heron: 1 on 27th January, 1 on 19th February, 1 on 19th March, in April 1 on 1st, 2nd, 3 on 8th, 1 on 9th and 21st, in May 1 on 26th, in June 2 on 14th with 1 on

                       21st and 27th, in July 1 on 24th, in August 1 on 12th and 25th, in September 1 on 6th and 23rd, in October 1 on 3rd, in November 1 on 25th.

                                            

Red Kite: 1 or 2 birds from nearby breeding site seen in every month of the year usually over edge of wolds to the east of the reserve but occasionally flying over

                  the reserve.

                 

Marsh Harrier: 1 on 29th January, in February 1 on 1st, female on 4th, 1 on 12th and male on 19th, in April 1 on 4th, female on 16th and 29th, in May male on 6th

                            and female on 23rd, in June female on 18th, 22nd and 23rd, male and female seen on 8th July with female on 28th, in August 1 on 4th and 23rd, in 

                            September female on 2nd and 8th, in October juvenile on 4th, in November female on 30th, in December female on 4th and 15th.

                                            

Hen Harrier: Ring-tail bird flew North on 19th November.

                           

Goshawk: 1 seen well on 15th January was only report of the year.

                 

Sparrowhawk: Seen regularly throughout every month of the year on and around the reserve with 3 together on August 28th,

 

Buzzard: Several birds now resident in woodland along ridge to east of reserve with birds seen regularly from the  reserve and occasionally overflying the

                 reserve, with upto a dozen birds seen in the autumn.

 

Osprey: In May 1 seen on 5th and 23rd.

 

Merlin: 1 on 26th January, female on 30th May, in August 1 on 9th, 12th and 14th, 1 on 20th October,1 on 5th November, 1 on 2nd December was last of the year.

 

Hobby: 1 on 17th May was first of the year with 2 together on 22nd, in June 1 on 4th, 8th, 12th and 19th, 1 on 28th July, in September 1 on 2nd, 5th and 29th.

 

Peregrine: In January seen on 4th, 5th, 14th, 20th and 21st, in February 1 on 15th, 24th and 25th, in April 1 on 2nd, in June 1 on 13th, in August 1 on 12th and 26th, in

                   September 1 9th, 16th and 17th, in October an immature bird seen on 6th, 10th, 17th and 27th with an adult also seen on 27th, in November 1 on 16th, 29th

                   and 30th, in December 1 on 24th and 30th.

                  

Water Rail: 1 seen on October 7th was first of the year then seen or heard on and off til years end.

 

Moorhen: A year round resident with several pairs breeding and a maximum WeBS count of 53 on 8th October.

 

Coot: A year round resident with several pairs breeding with WeBS counts of 217 in January, 128 in February, 95 in March, 222 in October, 142 in November

           and 154 in December.   

 

Oystercatcher: 1 on 20th January was first of the year, with a maximum count of 52 on 26th March, 2 pairs tried to bred but only 1 successfully raising 2 young.

                          

Avocet: 2 on 2nd March were the first of the year with 19 by the 26th, a site record count of 51 was made on 23rd April with 16 pairs nesting by end of month, then

              28 pairs nesting during May but only c12 young seen by end of month. There was then a complete failure of the colony due to adverse weather with the

              worst floods in c60 years effecting the area also there was severve predation by fox’s and gull’s of both chicks and eggs. 3 birds on 8th July were the last

              sighting of the year.

 

Little Ringed Plover: 2 on 5th April were the first of the year, at least 2 pairs attempted to bred but failed due to the June Floods, a  juvenile on 8th July with an

                                     adult on 25th were the last reports of the year.

                                     

Ringed Plover: 1 on 3rd February was first of the year with upto 8 present by end of the month, about 3 pairs attempted to bred but failed due to the June floods, then no further sightings until 3 on 28th September with 1 on 29th, with 2 on 7th October being the last of the year.

                                          

Golden Plover: Seen in most months of the year except in May, June and July with the highest single day count being 250 on 13th November.

 

Grey Plover: 1 in flight on 26th February with 9 Golden Plovers.

 

Lapwing: Seen on and around the reserve all year round with flocks of several hundred birds seen after the breeding season and during the winter months, at least  

                  20 pairs bred on the reserve raising many young between them, with the first young seen being 4 on 15th April.

 

Knot: 1 on 18th August was only report of the year.

 

 

Sanderling: 1 on 13th and 14th May was only sighting of the year.

 

Little Stint: 1 on 14th May, 1 on 30th September and 1 on 5th October.

 

Temminck’s Stint: 1 on 27th May to 1st June.

 

Dunlin: 2 on 13th February were first of the year, in March 1 on 5th, 2 on 7th, 1 on 10th and 11th, small numbers present throughout April peaking at 6 on 25th, in

              May 16 on 11th was highest count, then seen on and off for rest of the year with 5 on 20th  November being the last of the year.

             

Ruff: 1 on 13th April was first of the year with 3 present by end of the month, upto 3 seen on and off in May, the next sighting was 1 on 5th August and 1 on 23rd

          and 24th, in September 2 on 9th, 1 on 10th, 1 on 16th and 27th, in October 1 on 1st, 3 on 4th, 5 on 5th, 4 on 6th, 2 on 7th, 3 on 8th, 2 on 10th with the last of the

          year being 1 on 13th.                        

 

Snipe: Seen in every month of the year except June and July with a peak count of 50+ in October.

           

Woodcock: 1 on 14th April, 1 on 10th May, 2 on 13th August, 2 on 18th November and 1 on 23rd December.

                                                            

Black-Tailed Godwit: 1 on 24th and 25th March was first of the year, in April 1 on 20th and 21st, 2 on 22nd, 1 on 23rd to 27th, in May 1 on 4th and 8 on 23rd, in July 

                                      8 on 17th and 3 on 27th, with the last of the year being 1 on 22nd November.

 

Bar-tailed Godwit: In April 2 on 28th, 4 on 29th and 30th, in May 5 on 1st, 4 on 2nd and 2 on 3rd, finally 1 on 18th and 20th November.

 

Whimbrel: 2 on 29th April were the first of the year, in May 11 on 5th, 1 on 7th, 2 on 8th, 1 on 9th, 1 on 11th and 12th, in July 4 on 14th, in August 1 on 12th with the

                    last sighting being 1 on the late date of  30th October.

 

Curlew: Seen in every month of the year with a maximum counts of 45+ seen on April 12th and 47 on 18th November.

 

Redshank: Present in every month of the year with a peak count of 53 on 11th January at least 2 pairs bred successfully raising 2 young each.

 

Greenshank: 1 on 19th March was first of the year, 1 on 30th April,1 on 9th May, 1 on 27th July, in August 1 on 9th, 2 on 10th, 1 on 12th, 2 on 16th, 1 on 20th and

                         27th.

                      

Green Sandpiper: 1 on 11th February was first of the year, then seen on and off through til the last of the year of 1 on 26th November with a peak count of 7 on

                               24th August.   
                                                               

Wood Sandpiper: 1 on 27th April was first of the year in May 1 on 17th and 21st.

 

Common Sandpiper: 1 on 17th March was first of the year, in April 2 on 25th  with 1 on 26th to 30th, in May 1 seen on and off all month, the last sightings of the

                                     year were in September with 1 on 18th and 29th.

 

Grey Phalarope: Juvenile moulting into first-winter plumage on 26th September was a new species for the reserve.

 

Mediterranean Gull: 2 1st summer birds on 12th and 13th May with 1 remaining til 14th, a 1st summer bird on 4th June, 1 on 12th  and 17th July, with a second

                                     winter bird on 12th October being the last of the year.

 

Little Gull: 2 on 7th of April was first of the year with 1 on 8th to 11th, 2 on 12th, 3 on 13th to 15th, 2 on 16th and 17th with 1 on 18th, in September 2 on 6th and 1 on

                     29th.

 

Black-headed Gull: Seen all year round on the reserve with a colony of c120 pairs breeding raising many young.

 

Common Gull: Seen on and off in every month of the year in small numbers.

 

Herring Gull: Seen on and off in small numbers in every month of the year.

 

Lesser Black-backed Gull: 1 on 6th January was first of the year then seen on and off for rest of year in small numbers with upto 20 seen at times.

 

Greater Black-backed Gull: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers with upto 50 birds present on occasions.

 

Kittiwake: 3 on 30th March and 3 on 13th April.

 

Common Tern: 1 on 15th April was first of the year, 6 pairs bred 5 successfully raising 9 young between them.

 

Arctic Tern:  1 on 4th May was only sighting of the year.

 

Little Tern: 1 on 6th August was only the second reserve record.

 

Black Tern: Adult summer plumaged bird seen on 10th June with a juvenile on 25th September.

 

Little Auk: 1 was present during the afternoon of 12th November and was a new species for the reserve.

 

Stock Dove: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers around the reserve.

 

Woodpigeon: Present around the reserve all year in varying numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding.on the reserve.

 

Turtle Dove: 2 on 13th May were first of the year with 2 also seen on 15th and 18th, in June 1 on 16th, in August 2 on 17th, with late birds seen on 9th and 14th September.

 

Cuckoo: 1 on 26th April was first of the year, in May 1 seen on 11th, 14th and 25th, in July 1 on 21st, in August 1 on 3rd, 5th and 10th being the last sighting of the

                year. 

 

Barn Owl: The pair resident around farm just to north of reserve could been seen regularly hunting on and around the reserve mainly a single bird but 2 birds

                   seen on a few occasions.

              

Little Owl: The pair resident just to west of reserve seen from 11th March  then on and off throughout the rest of the year.

 

Tawny Owl: 1 found roosting on 9th December was a rare reserve sighting.

 

Swift: First of year was on 24th April with 1 on 10th September being the last of the year.

 

Kingfisher: In January 1 seen on 13th and 27th, in February 1 on 25th and 26th, in March 1 on 10th, in April 1 on 4th and 5th, in Junne 1 on 11th 23rd, in July 1 on 8th, 11th, 22nd, 24th and 29th, then 1 or 2 seen on and off throughout August to November with 3 together on 18th September.

 

Green Woodpecker: Present throughout the year,mostly single bird sightings but 2 seen together on many dates.

                                   

Great Spotted Woodpecker: Seen throughout the year mainly single birds but pair together on occasions.

 

Skylark: Several pairs bred on the reserve this year with counts of upto 40 during December in winter stubble fields around the reserve.

 

Sand Martin: 1 on 12th March was the first of the year, then seen over reserve feeding throughout the summer but no breeding took place due to more suitable

                        habitat nearby, the last report of the year was  in mid September.

 

Swallow: 1 on 10th April was first of the year with 1 on 15th October being the last of the year.

 

House Martin: 1 on 10th April was first of the year with 8 on 3rd October being the last reports of the year.

 

Meadow Pipit: Present all year round on or around the reserve in small numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding on site.

                                               

Rock Pipit: 2 on 27th October were the only sighting this year.

 

Yellow Wagtail: 8 on 16th April were the first of the year then 1 or 2 seen on and off throughout the summer with the last of the year being 1 on 9th September.

 

Grey Wagtail: 1 on 11th and 25th March,1 on 2nd and 7th June,1 on 29th August, 1 on 10th and 13th September, 1 on 21st October was last of the year.

 

Pied Wagtail: Seen on and off in every month of the year, with flocks of upto 50 seen in autumn and early winter.

 

Wren: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs probably breeding.

 

Dunnock: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

 

Robin: Resident all year round on the reserve in small numbers with a few birds breeding.

 

Redstart: Female present on 30th and 31st July was a new species for the reserve.

 

Whinchat: Female on 24th and 25th August was only sighting of the year.

 

Stonechat: Pair on 10th February, 1 on 21st April, 1 on 8th May, a juvenile seen on 18th June was a major surprise, in September male on 29th, in October male on 

                    5th to 8th, 1 on 18th, pair on 19th then 1 til end of month, in November 1 on 2nd, 4th, 10th and 17th, in December female on 10th with a pair on 12th being

                    the last report of the year.

                 

Wheatear: 1 on 12th April was first of the year with 2 on 14th, 1 on 18th and 2 on 26th, in May 1 on 1st and 4th, in September 1 on 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th.

                  

Blackbird: Resident throughout the year with occasional small influxes of birds in the autumn with a few pairs Breeding.

 

Fieldfare: Small numbers seen on and off throughout both winter periods.

                 

Song Thrush: Seen in all months of the year in small numbers with probable the odd pair breeding.

 

Redwing:  Small numbers seen on and off throughout both winter periods.             

 

Mistle Thrush: Seen on and off in all months of the year in small numbers.

 

Sedge Warbler: 2 on 23rd April were the first of the year, with a minimum of 9 singing birds through the summer with several pairs breeding.

 

Reed Warbler: 1 on 2nd May was first of the year with upto 6 pairs breeding with several juveniles been seen.

                                                    

Lesser Whitethroat: 1 on 15th April was the first of the year with 3 present by the end of the month, at least 2 pairs bred successfully.

 

                                   

Whitethroat: 2 on 20th April were the first of the year with the last sighting being 1 on 15th September with several pairs breeding.                    

 

Garden Warbler: 1 on 13th May was the first of the year, 1 on 13th June, 1 on 23rd July, 1 on 5th August was last report of the year.

 

Blackcap: 2 on 15th April were the first of the year with 1 on 18th October being the last of the year

 

Chiffchaff: 1 singing on 9th March was first of the year then seen on and off til the last of the year being 1 on 13th November.

 

Willow Warbler: 1 on 11th April was first of the year then seen on and off til the last of the year being 1 on 30th September.

                     

Goldcrest: In January 1 on 22nd and 29th, in March 1 on 31st, 1 in July, then odd birds seen on and off in September, October, November and December with.

 

Spotted Flycatcher: 1 on 11th August.

 

Long-tailed Tit: Seen on and off throughout the year in every month except April with flocks of 20+ seen at times.

 

Willow Tit: 1 on 2nd November.

 

Coal Tit: 1 on 15th July, 1 on 30th September.

 

Blue Tit: Resident all year with at least 5 pairs breeding in the nest boxes on the reserve.

 

Great Tit: Resident all year with at least 4 pairs breeding in the nest boxes on the reserve.

 

Jay: 1 on 3rd March, 1 on 23rd and 27th September, 1 on 10th and 22nd October.

 

Magpie: Resident on and around the reserve all year round with flocks of upto 7 seen at times, with at least 1 pair breeding.

 

Jackdaw: Resident on and around the reserve all year round.

 

Rook: Resident on and around the reserve all year round, often large numbers seen at roost times.

 

Carrion Crow: Resident on and around the reserve all year round.

 

Raven: 1 flew East over reserve on 25th November, second reserve record.

 

Starling: Resident on and around the reserve all year round, with flocks of upto 4000 seen at times.

 

House Sparrow:,Seen in most months of the year in small numbers but still an uncommon visitor to the reserve from nearby village.

                                                                                                                                                                       

Tree Sparrow: Resident in varying numbers throughout the year upto a maximum flock of 50 seen, at least 6 pairs  bred this year on the reserve each raising 2

                           broods.

 

Chaffinch: Year round resident of the reserve in small numbers with a few pairs  breeding.

 

Greenfinch: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

 

Goldfinch: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with a few pairs breeding.

 

Siskin:  12 on 30th September were the first of the year then seen on and off til the years end with a flock of at least 50 seen in late December. 

           

Linnet: Present on and off all year with a maximum of 50 seen at any one time.

 

Lesser Redpoll: In January 1 on 19th, 21st and 30th, in February 2 on 7th and 1 on 11th, in October 2 on 9th, in November 1 seen on 23rd, 25th, 26th and 30th, in

                            December 1 on 1st,10 on 4th, 4 on 7th and 1 on 18th.

 

Mealy Redpoll: 4 on 5th October.

 

Bullfinch: In January 3 on 1st, pair on 13th, 1 on 15th, 2 on 23rd, 1 on 24th and 27th, male on 5th March, 2 males and a female on 20th May, male on 26th June, pair

                   on 29th July, 1 on 5th August, pair on 20th October, 17th and 28th November, in December female on 19th, pair on 22nd, female on 23rd,pair on 29th.  

                 .  

Yellowhammer: Seen in every month of the year in small numbers but 50+ seen in late December was an excellent count.

 

Reed Bunting: Resident on the reserve all year round in small numbers with 1 or 2 pairs breeding.

 

Corn Bunting: 1 on 4th February was the first of the year, 1 on 2nd April, with 1 or 2 birds singing throughout May, June and July, sightings then became very

                           scarce through to the year end.

                                              

Summary:

   In total 152 species of bird were recorded on or from the reserve in 2007 with 3 new species for the reserve;

   Grey Phalarope, Little Auk and Redstart.
